Legacy Planning Week 1: Who Are You Doing This For?

By Emily Kyle Founder & Guide Writer 2 min read

Who are you doing your legacy plan for?

Death Planning Is About the People You Leave Behind

Who will be impacted most when you’re gone?

This is week 1 of a 4-week challenge called: Death Prep for Dummies. The most pain-free way to start planning for the inevitable.

Death planning isn’t about you—it’s about the people you leave behind. This week, reflect on who you’re doing this for. Who do you care about the most in this world? Who are you making things easier for once you’re gone and your affairs have to be settled?

Reflect on the People Who Matter Most

Consider:

  • Who depends on you—financially, emotionally, or practically?
  • Who would you want to receive specific items or support?
  • Who do you trust to carry out your wishes?
  • Who needs to be notified first? (your boss, your doctor, your landlord, your attorney)?

This Week’s Prompt & Action

**Prompt:
**Write down the names of the 3–5 people most impacted by your absence. This is your starting list of beneficiaries, caretakers, or key decision-makers.

**Actions:
**Start a shared doc or physical folder labeled “Estate Plan: WHO” and drop in this list. You’ll build on it throughout the series. (Or you can use our Google Templates).

Deadline (no pun intended):

Do this by Friday and tell those people you love them by Sunday night.

With all due respect and a bit of jest…
